WORLDWIDE WEDNESDAY: Willie Nelson, "A Song for You" (Live)

I don't necessarily want to roll from disaster to disaster each week, but I also don't want to avoid them just sticking my head in the sand.

I was thinking about the storms and tornadoes in Oklahoma this past week. Of course, that leads to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I'm always partial to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version, but I also like Willie. Luckenbach, Tx, isn't all the close to Oklahoma, but it's a lot closer than I am.

In the end I went with "A Song for You" because "Rainbow" seemed a bit trite.

OPEN REQUEST SUNDAY: Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire"

Today's request is dedicated to the memory of Wilhelmina, and her beautiful, deep alto voice. Thank you, Darla, for sharing your grandmother's favorite song with us.

John Prine, "Fish and Whistle"

Johnny Cash once called Prine one of the "Big Four" songwriters he turned to for inspiration.  It's easy to see why...

I been thinking lately about the people I meet
The carwash on the corner and the hole in the street
The way my ankles hurt with shoes on my feet
And I'm wondering if I'm gonna see tomorrow.

NOSTALGIA WEEK: Alabama, "I'm in a Hurry (and Don't Know Why)"

This one vividly teleports me back to 8th grade, when I couldn't be pried apart from my buddies Jeff, Cameron and Isac.  Within my ever-distant memory, this remains the soundtrack to that year.  In an effort to dredge up some more nostalgia, I skimmed the surface of the 'Nets, and found this ever-helpful song description on wikipedia:

"The song is an up-tempo, in which the narrator talks about the fast pace of today's society.  He states that he is always in a hurry but he doesn't know why he is rushing."

Thanks for the insight.  Simpler times.

George Strait, "Amarillo by Morning"

Strait Outta Texas, I won't say that this is my favorite karaoke song.  I'll just say I kind of like doing karaoke, and I kind of like doing this song.  Now subsititute "really" for "kind of."

Loretta Lynn and Jack White, "Portland, Oregon"

From the album Van Lear Rose... I'm fairly certain Jack White has a crush on Loretta.  Just watch the video.
