A CAPPELLA WEEK: Seminaarinmäen Mieslaulajat, "Taina" (Live)

I don't have a clue about the lyrics, but the song is pretty amazing, as are the haircuts. Won-don, ka-tik-a-da-don-don. I love this stuff. What I also love: after watching the video on YouTube, what was recommended? Check Your Head, in its entirety. Peas in a pod.

  1. "Taina" is a lake region in central Finland traditionally known for summer vacation homes. In recent years, however, it is most famed for the 1000 km rally track (technically only 200 km, they do 5 circuits) similar to our own Baja 1000. The song lyrics as I understand them reference both the woodsy folkdom of extremely long summer days in lakeside cottages and also the speed and thrill of Finland's most popular export (rally/race driving, just narrowly edging out indestructible cellphones, both obliterating Finland's first famous export: architects).

The song is much deeper, however. If you listen carefully, "Taina" is pronounced more and more like "Daina" or "daïna." Daïna is homebrew moonshine commonly made in the warm summers in the lake region. Unfortunately, it is flavored with cedar and often is made poorly resulting in high wood alcohol content. The danger of alcohol poisoning and Finland's rampant alcoholism represent the darkness that is ever-present in northern Scandinavia, even in high summer.

Thanks, Mr. Carr for this stirring rendition.

    1. I'm pretty sure everything that you said is complete B.S., Mr. Jordan, with the exception of Taina being in Finland. The lyrics seem to make it a very straightforward love song, unless you can read farther into the Finnish language than I could ever hope. I suppose I wouldn't put it past you :)
