Other Lives, "For 12"

Thanks to Loren for keeping Tuna Day relevant.  From Stillwater, Oklahoma... something of a folk Radiohead (an obviously poor recollection of Loren's description).  Enjoy!

OPEN REQUEST SUNDAY: Wilco, "War on War" (Live on Letterman)

Andrew explains:

"I like this live version because the intro is a little longer than straight off the album.  The rhythm, especially in the beginning sounds so rich, and you get a really get into the chord progression once the bass kicks in.  You can feel everything starting to come together right away and then Tweedy breaks straight into 'it's a war on war.....'  The intro is great because you can really get a sense of the layers that Wilco builds into a lot of their music: the rich amped acoustic guitars, the oft-goofy keyboards, a dry, vaguely raspy Tweedy, and an extended jam-sessiony outro...definitely on my list of bands to see live [haven't yet :(]."

Enjoy!

Rain Machine, "Give Blood"

Enter the romper room and wreak havoc, with the solo project of (TV on the Radio's) Kyp Malone... Enjoy!  And jump on the bed!  Unless you're Blue!

Theophilus London, "I Stand Alone"

Theo rocks the bolo tie better than I ever could.  So jealous.  Maybe I need sunglasses.

Gladys Knight and the Pips, "I Heard It through the Grapevine"

Originally written for Smokey Robinson & the Miracles by Barrett Strong ("Money (That's What I Want)") and Norman Whitfield, the song faced an uphill battle past Berry Gordy to reach the public.  Gladys' and the Pips' version was the first to be released and eventually became a #1 single.  Of course it was later outperformed by Marvin's definitive take, but this is stellar... seen here on Soul Train.  Enjoy!

Sleigh Bells, "Infinity Guitars"

Mieve Stelke, formerly of Brooklyn, gave this inscrutable take on "Infinity Guitars": "Gritty…. Makes me want to artfully arrange some Hors d'oeuvres." If you agree, you must be drinking the same water... or hosting a cocktail reception in the city.

The Beta Band, "Dry the Rain"

From The Three EPs, and central to a memorable scene from High Fidelity.  For additional reading, check out this Guardian piece from a few years back, which ponders their break-up and inexplicable lack of mainstream acceptance.  Enjoy!

Fashawn, "When She Calls"

From his 2009 debut album, Boy Meets World.  As an aside, take a look at the wonderful closing line from the "Career" section of his wikipedia bio (you know, the part about "Grizzly City Kush").  Enjoy!

Heart, "Alone"

The standout track from their 1987 album Bad Animals, Heart took complete ownership of the song, written four years prior by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly (who later wrote "Like a Virgin" and "True Colors").  Evidently Kelly provided harmony ("high harmony," in fact... but definitely not Cooleyhighharmony) on the recording.  Don't blink, or you might miss Nancy Wilson magically galloping in on horseback.  This goes out to Maura and Sara...  Enjoy!

(NOT QUITE) OPEN REQUEST SUNDAY: Bread, "Guitar Man"

Our cab driver turned entertainer when this song came on the radio yesterday,.  His ringing endorsement (he enjoys playing it on his guitar, too) convinced me that if he knew Tuna Day existed and had an Open Request Sunday, he would most definitely vote for some Bread.  Enjoy!

The Beatles, "Dig a Pony"

From their rooftop performance above the Apple studios in 1969 (their last public performance together). Maybe this YouTube commenter can say more eloquently what you might be unable to verbalize right now:

"This song makes jump out of bed, run naked through town, climb a big tree and swing through the trees, sky dive while trying to hunt birds in the air, cause a riot, dig a pony, grow my hair really long, wave it through the air, feel like Jesus, wake up, repeat."

And yes, I'm slowly discovering that when I have nothing to say about a song, I can always rely on YouTube comments as a crutch. Enjoy!

Dr. Dog, "Unbearable Why"

If you're in Lawrence--or nearby--maybe you caught these guys last night at the Granada? Full report requested, please!
